New Website: Provident Planning!

Filed under: Random Stuff — Paul Williams @ Crackerjack Greenback @ 1:57 pm

I’m sure you all have noticed the lack of updates on Crackerjack Greenback for quite some time. (I know because many people have asked me!) This is partly due to my upcoming wedding, but it’s also because I’ve been working on setting up a new website.

Provident Planning

As I’ve worked through the Personal Finance Bible Study, I’ve found that God is calling me to follow His lead on this project. Part of that means creating a website completely devoted to God’s financial wisdom in the Bible. Provident Planning is the name of the new website and the web address is Crackerjack Greenback just isn’t a good name for a website that’s going to focus on God’s plan for our finances.

I’ve found that God has a Provident Plan for each of our lives. His plan includes four main parts: contentment, hard work, giving, and stewardship. All four of these areas work together to guide our lives as we make financial and spiritual choices every day. You’ve already discovered a lot about what God says about contentment and how that may affect our lives. I’ve moved all my posts on contentment to Provident Planning, and I’ll be exploring the other areas in time.

It may still be a while before I resume consistent updates on either Provident Planning or Crackerjack Greenback. I haven’t quite decided what I’ll do with Crackerjack Greenback, but I do know I want to finish finding all the verses in the bible related to personal finance before I begin writing for Provident Planning. You can still see all the verses I’ve found about personal finance in the Bible at Provident Planning. Once I finish that project, I’ll begin writing on those other areas (hard work, giving, and stewardship). I may continue to occasionally update Crackerjack Greenback with articles that are not relevant for Provident Planning.

If you’d like to know when I’ve finished the personal finance Bible verses project and have begun writing on Provident Planning, I encourage you to sign up for free updates to Provident Planning. You can get them through your email or your favorite RSS feed reader. Thanks for reading so far, and please feel free to tell your friends about Provident Planning!

Bob over at ChristianPF has put together a list of the top Christian financial websites, and Crackerjack Greenback made the list! Check out the article to find more useful resources as you seek God’s guidance for your finances.

Also, Crackerjack Greenback was included in the 191st Carnival of Personal Finance – Wizard of Oz Edition last week. There are many articles there if you’re looking for something to read about personal finance.

A Guide to Wet Shaving (at

Filed under: Frugality,Random Stuff — Paul Williams @ Crackerjack Greenback @ 2:24 pm

Sharp! by John Griffiths on Flickr       Vince over at posted a great article today about wet shaving. I researched wet shaving over a year ago and started off with just a badger hair shaving brush and quality shaving cream. Boy, did it make a difference in my shaves! I highly recommend men consider wet shaving.

The initial cost of the equipment is higher than buying some disposable razors and a can of shaving cream, but in the long run it’s more cost effective and gives you higher quality shaves. The tubs of shaving cream I get cost about $13, but they last about 3-4 months! Not to mention the cost of replacing razor blades is much cheaper (~$0.50/blade for high quality blades) than buying more Mach3 cartridges (~$2/cartridge?). Wet shaving can be a good frugal choice if you don’t skimp on equipment that will last and take the time to learn how to shave properly.

Weekend Reading: Carnival of Personal Finance #186 – Fairy Tale Edition and Weekly Roundup

Filed under: Random Stuff — Paul Williams @ Crackerjack Greenback @ 4:00 am

My article on The Benefits of Premarital Counseling was included in this week’s Carnival of Personal Finance hosted by Clever Dude. He put a lot of work into making this week’s carnival read like a fairy tale instead of a list of links. Take a few minutes to check it out. I’m sure you’ll find some other interesting articles while you’re there!

In other news, here are some articles from this week that I thought were worth sharing with you:

  • Trent at The Simple Dollar talks about Seven Huge Mistakes He Made During His College Career. I can identify with Trent here. I made some of the same mistakes during college. I could have made much more out of the experience. Take some time to read this if you or someone you know is preparing to go to college. I don’t know if it will help, but it might help some people.
  • Mike at The Oblivious Investor discusses How Portfolio Turnover Affects Mutual Fund Return. He does a great job pointing out the costs of owning a mutual fund with high turnover. It’s a good point to consider if you are investing in mutual funds (though the concept would still apply if you’re purchasing individual stocks – but I wouldn’t recommend that).
  • Wise Bread has some great frugality tips that were very common during the Great Depression. Frugality is a smart choice no matter what the economy looks like, but it’s especially important during hard times. I especially like the motto: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.”

That’s all for this week. Thanks for reading!

Weekend Reading: Best of the Carnival of Personal Finance #182 – Don’t Go Broke Over The Holidays Edition

Filed under: Random Stuff — Paul Williams @ Crackerjack Greenback @ 4:00 am

My article, “A Closer Look at a 100% Diversified Stock Portfolio” was included in the most recent Carnival of Personal Finance hosted by Free From Broke. Here are some of the best posts this week, in my opinion:

Also, J.D. Roth at Get Rich Slowly had a great post about When Less is More: The Importance of Perceived Value. J.D. has some great thoughts here, and value is the big difference between being frugal and being cheap.
